Awesome job Robby you rocked that competition!
How many times or minutes do you do double unders for
#2 you start w/20 du's at min 1 you do 20 du's at min 2 you do 20 du's ad continue this until you finish all 75 hspu's. the goal is to get them hspu's done as quick as possible
That My friend is an OUTSTANDING beard!
Oh, and congratulations on the first muscle up.
no rope for double unders need an alternate if at all possible
@#6 john - Do tuck jumps instead! Look under the FAQ section.
Congrats to Robby! Awesome. And what the picture doesn't tell is the awesome coaching job that Dave Rice did with some great tips to motivate Robby just that little extra to allow him to succeed. Love this sport and the folks we meet in it!
The guy got his first muscle up with those meat hooks it wouldn't take long.
What a great video with Neal! That's what it's all about.

This is going to take me all afternoon. Oh well, let's get after it.
Hey guys I'm 16 and have been doing crossfit for just over a month. I was wondering if there are any tips or tricks to handstand push-ups just like pull-ups(kipping). I am not strong enough to support all my body weight so I was wondering if handstand push-ups are a pure strength thing you have to build over time or are there some ways to make it easier.
Thanks
Going to have to scale this one, shoulder still not ready for this... But can't wait to try it RX
Epic beard dude, congrats on the muscle up!
I can barely do handstand push ups or double unders, this is gonna take a while...
#11 try doing shoulder presses instead untill u get to the hspu's. There is a lot of strength involved in doing them but there is def a good amount of skill in them as well
Nothing describes Robby better than this photo. An amazing individual with an even better beard. For those ever in the Upstate New York area, check out his awesome facility Athletes Unleashed in Orchard Park, NY.
So, if you're keeping score at home, there's really not a whole heck of a lot of stuff left we haven't done yet this month. This one looks like a lot of fun, a burner. I'm tempted to tell you NOT to watch Dan Bailey do it, though. Crazy fast. It's some kind of beyond crazy to think about how fast Michele Letendre must have been going.
We've done these movements already this month. This is one of the really cool parts about CrossFit--same movements, really different application. Every minute starts with 20 jump rope double-unders. The rope must pass under your feet twice on each jump. Can't do DU? Takes you 0:59 to do 20? Gotta sub or scale. Maybe 10 DU or 30 single-unders. The classic sub is tuck jumps, 1:1. Jump, clasp your hands around your knees, release your knees in time to land on your feet.
Handstand Push-ups (HSPU). The standard HSPU is kick up to a handstand with your heels against the wall. Scale by reducing ROM with abmat(s) under your head. You can scale further by doing this with your chest against the wall, hooking your toes on a bar on the squat rack, or planting your knees or your feet on a box and piking into the handstand. 75 or these is just a boatload. Think about scaling to 50.
How exactly does this one go? 0:00 do 20 DU. Drop your rope and do HSPU until 0:59. At 1:00 do 20 DU. Drop your rope and do HSPU until 1:59. Continue this pattern until you have completed 75 HSPU (or however many you've decided to do). This is a fast WOD; aim for scales and subs that gets you in under 12:00 or so. Don't get discouraged! These are skills that can be acquired with practice and perseverance. The best way to get by in the beginning is be willing to laugh at yourself!
And maybe NOT watch Dan do it. Phew. 3-2-1...Go.
LOVE that picture! Congrats, Beard Guy!
#11 - There is the easier handstand push-up that involves a kicking of the feet. See the WOD Demo from January 16, 2013 and you will see the technique.
#11 - Try scaling the movement by doing it with your feet elevated on a box. Try to keep your upper body as vertical as possible to produce the same range of motion as a real hspu, and not simply do push-ups with elevated feet. See example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=8LNrVMoGUsw
To build strength in your arms, you can also do sets of handstand holds, if you can. Kick your feet up to a wall like you would do for a hspu, but just hold the position with arms locked out for 10, 20, 30 secs (or more) depending on how long you can hold. Then take a couple minutes of rest and repeat 2 or 3 times.
I wouldn't recommend you try kipping hspus if you are unable to do the strict version. It may make it easier to go up, but you still need strength to lower yourself safely.
Love the beard guy!! W Gilpin can do 75 hspu unbroken!!
@#11
There are a few ways to scale them. You can do pike push ups, or if you have access to a squat rack, you can put a 45# bar on the rack, do a handstand and curl your legs over the bar, where the bar is in the crease behind your knee. Both allow you to not have to support your entire weight with your upper body. Plus, the second one helps with the handstand technique.
How do you feel dan Bailey?
Michele Lentendre WOOT!!!
Potential scales are:
1. Do the HSPU, then do the DU's after completing the HSPU's, 20 for every minute the original WOD takes. Not the most ideal, but for many this may be the only way to complete this WOD in a reasonable amount of time.
2. Scale down the HSPU. In my case, I would do 50, then do the DU's, 20x(minutes it takes to do the HSPU).
3. Also consider doing the HSPU's scaled (Such as knees on a box, legs on a smith machine bar, ect)

That sucked! I did about the first 40 strict and kipped on the rest. I thought I would be able to do about 10 HSPU each minute. I was wrong.
Love that video of Neal. All about the team.
See the look on his face! That picture exemplifies what Buffalo and western NY is all about. Congrats man, and congrats Dave on an awesome box!

21:44 Scaled 20 single unders + 10 double unders every minutes. Completed all 75 HSPU...slowly haha
Great workout for targeting two of my weaknesses. I scaled as I can only consistently do one DU after 2 singles. This is super motivating to master the DU and get stronger on HSPU!
It's a well established fact that a full grown beard can add up to 10% on your deadlift. Should we assume from this picture is there also substantial carryover to MU's?
Cool picture.
Everything from my lower back down is sore as hell.
So I worked on my handstand push ups in the garage gym. Did a total of 50 reps, broken up in various sets and actually got a PR of 7 in a row!

The DU's killed the shoulders way more than I thought they would haha. Awesome workout!
Congrats on the first Muscle Up!!
this one was a little off for me
DU: had to do 60 singles instead of 20 double unders for each minute because i do not have the double under movement down yet.
HSPU: i used 3 ab mats for my depth when i started. my HSPU broke down completely with that at 5:00 into the workout so i had to pause my time and hurry to get a 45# bumper plate and use that plus the three mats to finish
HSPU with 3 ab mats only: 14-6-5-2-1= 28
HSPU with 3 ab mats + 45# bumper: 12-5-16-10-4= 47
Total: 75 as prescribed *not full range of motion*

Kipping hspu after 35
Okay, hspu's are one of my weakest lifts - striking the shoulder strength inbalance and reaction (not by choice, but surgery that is improving)
17:51 - 49 hspu(left arm kept giving out on the 50th), 10 tuck jumps scaled
Modified as below. Time - 14:11.
Foot won't allow DUs, and I was struggling to come up with a sub. In the end, I settled on 10 kettlebell swings at 1.5p. It was a poor sub, as 10 swings takes me ~20 seconds (longer than 20 DUs) and swings use a lot more shoulder than DUs. So when I got to the top of minute 10, I called off the swings (at 100, it was turning into more of a kb swing wod). At that point I was at 59 HSPUs. It was still tough - last 5 HSPUs were all singles. Fun WOD - sometime, I'll try it with DUs.

I did this, still pretty sick, after a layoff of a few days from being super duper sick. I did this because I would not totally gas out and it was not a super killer WOD, in my opinion.. I was right. Yes, it will burn your upper body and shoudlers and triceps, but you won't go too long and it won't gas you out.
I did it as follows:
Min. 1: 19

I finished in 6:50
After about the first 35 or so, I started to Kip.
This kipping allowed me to really keep going... I might ahve been able to go a bit faster, but I am/ was still sick and didn't want to go all out... I was staying well within myself.. didn't want to start coughing like crazy, etc.
After about 10 minutes I did 1 more round to see how my shoudlers and triceps would feel after stretching out... did 20 reps.. felt pretty good.
The kip is a nice addition.. I don't normally kip, but when you do a lot of reps, like yesterday, you should do it, to maintain intensity adn full ROM as well as a continuation of work, instead of just staring at the wall and ground and getting pissed off after repeated failing.

Colleen Maher from Frontrange Crossfit did it in 1:54 today!!
6:47 for 35 hspu, 60 single unders every minute. 1k run wu 5:12
Went to 30 HSPUs at 10' mark. Setup per demo vid, 45lb plates/abmat. Very narrow grip+no warmup, by 30 reps I was down to singles. No issues w/ DUs. Then Zils hail/fwl.
For time:
75 Feet Elevated Push-ups (subbed for HSPU)
At the beginning of each minute perform 20 Tuck Jumps (subbed for Double-unders)
6:51
Subbed single-unders x30.
HSPU comp-standard.
15:00
15 DUs to start each minute.
30 HSPUs
8:33. So hard.
25:00 mins exactly, as Rx.
Tough, long, and a pathetic time, but I wanted to do it as Rx - can't get better if you don't push yourself.
M/35/5'10"/200
Scaled down the double unders to 25.
9:45 what a smoker!!!!
Hoooah Army Crossfit!!!
Used 20 knee clasps instead of 20 DUs each minute. Got 25 HSPUs in 6 minutes. Did the rest (the other 50) as push-ups with feet elevated approx 3 ft. Total time was 9:10.
Super brutal workout. Had to rest a couple of rounds on the handstand push-ups. Still completed the workout in 14:51 RX'd. On a brighter note, I got all the 15 rounds of the DU's unbroken except one lol :DD
Did this today, scaled with a couple of plates to reduce range in HSPU.
14:59
Horrible.

Glad DU came back to me. Arms in good position & good job w/tight butt. Missed doing HSPU a couple of rounds. ROM not real good on HSPU toward end.

First round 15. Then 8,7,5,5,

been a while since I felt so unprepared for a WOD. that was brutal. I had a few times where I barely got through the DUs in a minute. heh.

Big CF day today, finally managed my first HSPU after months of scaling up to it... then did ~30 more over the course of an hour
Full ROM wasn't there, head was going down to ~5" from floor (pillow height), will work on that over time
Awesome job Brother, Semper Fi

11:00 exactly.
Toes over smith bar. The fatigue on the HSPU, while trying to crank out the DU caught up to me fast.
